Composite Deck Materials

Over the last 15 years, composite materials have become the new standard for decks to the point where 98% of all decks we build are with composites. The main reason for this shift is the proven performance superiority of composite products over wood products as well as some new composite product lines that are priced to compete with the cost of a wood or cedar deck.

What are Deck Composite Materials?

Materials that are designed and engineered to overcome a lot of the short comings of wood products such as:

  • Splintering
  • Cracking
  • Fading
  • Rotting
  • Warping

In addition to the above mentioned points, composite materials also do not require painting, staining, or sealing to maintain an appearance. As a matter of fact, almost all composite manufactures warranty their products for 20+ years against fading and staining, ensuring that your deck will look great with a low amount of maintenance for years to come!

Wood Deck Materials

Western Red Cedar

If choosing a wood deck, this is the material that we most recommend.  While softer and less durable that treated pine, it will maintain an overall nicer appearance through the years.   You can expect to seal the floor every 2 – 3 years, and the railing every 4 – 5 years.

  • Ground level cedar deck with octagon feature
  • Cedar rail with round aluminum spindle attached to a ground level deck

Pressure Treated Pine

Pressure treated pine is typically the least expensive decking material, and is a more durable material than cedar.  Pressure treated pine has the largest market share of any decking material used, wood or non-wood because it is the lowest cost material. However, it is very likely to shrink/crack/warp if it gets a lot of sunlight.  This type of deck will probably require occasional replacement of boards through it’s lifetime.
